The Creative Process with Modest Goddess: Creating a custom hankie dress

We'd like to take a moment to introduce you to the work of Modest Goddess. Melissa Boyd is a Navy Wife and WAHM Sewist! We just fell in love with her Hankie dresses, they're unique and we think she's got a nice little niche going!

The design and creative process is different for every designer, but what we think is one of the lovely things about custom boutique is the ability to work with a designer of your choosing to create a truly unique garment~one that is made especially for your child~ one that reflects your tastes and style. Combining these aspects with the designer's skill set, it is truly a one of a kind, and very special item! This isn't something that you can pick out at the mall, or the local department store; the love and care that goes into a collaborative effort between buyer and designer is what we ADORE about custom boutique.

Modest Goddess wants to make it as easy as possible to create the custom boutique hankie dress of your dreams.

Step 1
Choose your hankie.
Here is a link to the hankie photo album.  Go take a look and see if there is anything you like.  If you do see something you like send me a message on fb or a convo on etsy with a link or photo.  If you do not see something you like I recommend checking etsy or ebay for hankies.  Remember to check the various spelling options (hanky, hankie, handkerchief, etc).  If you have your own hankie or a family heirloom hankie you would like to incorporate into a dress convo or message me.  I will provide my address for shipping.

Step 2
Choosing your fabric.

Solid
The classic hankie dress is all white with a color hem band and sash.  What I recommend is to look at your hankie a choose a color within the hankie that you would like to accent or play up more.  I have a color chart that allows me to get the best solid match to the colors in your hankie.  If you are unsure, I can match up a few different colors in your hankie so you can choose your favorite.

Color/Solid
Choose this option if you would like your dress to be a solid color other than white.  I can help match up colors from your hankie and recommend some options.  You can still choose the hem band and sash fabric in solid or print.  Please read through the print section below regarding prints used for the hem band and sash.

Print
If you would like a hem band and sash in a printed fabric, what I can do is take your hankie with me to the fabric store to look for a coordinating print.  Let me know if you would like floral, geometric, dots, etc and I will try to find a few options for you.  I will email you photos of your selected hankie with each print and you can choose your favorite.  If you know of a print you saw online that you are interested in using I am happy to use it in your design, but I cannot guarantee a color match.  That being said, most hankie have a variety of color shades in them that makes them easy to use with a variety of prints.  I base the cost of the hem band and sash on the price of solid which averages about $5 a yard.  If you choose a print that costs more than this, I just ask that you pay the difference.  Most hankie dress sizes use 1 yard or less for the hem band and sash so the cost will generally not be more than $5 additional dollars a yard (based on the average cost of printed fabric being $10 a yard)  depending on the fabric you choose.

Print/Print or Print/Solid
The third option is if you would like to replace the classic white with a printed fabric.  I base the cost of the dress on the price of the white fabric which averages about $5 a yard.  If you choose a print that costs more than this, I just ask that you pay the difference.  The amount of fabric needed will vary based on the size you select.  Most hankie dress sizes use 2 yard or less for the dress so the cost will generally not be more than $10 additional dollars a yard (based on the average cost of printed fabric being $10 a yard)  depending on the fabric you choose.  You may still choose you hem band and sash fabric in either a solid or print.  If you choose a print, please read the print section above.  If you choose a solid there is no additional charge for the hem band/sash fabric.

Step 3
Choose your size.  If you know what size you would like just let me know.  If you are unsure or between sizes please send me basic measurements such as waist, height and weight and I can help determine the best size.  I can also customize the length, if you have a length request and widen or narrow the bodice based on chest measurements if needed.  That's the beauty of custom!

I can also make a peasant top to wear with your dress in solid or print fabric.
